# What Are Concrete Grades?

Concrete grades are used to denotes the characteristic compressive strength of concrete.

The concrete grade shows the characteristic strength of concrete 28 days after pouring.Strength of concrete in India is measured in N/mm^{2}.

Required grade of concrete depends on the intended use. Residential building mostly uses M20 to M25 grade of concrete and projects like bridges may require higher grades of concrete like M50 or M60.

Here, when we say grade of concrete is M25 the characteristic compressive strength of concrete after 28 days of pouring will be 25 N/mm^{2}. Here **M** denotes “**Mix**“. Characteristic Compressive strength of concrete is tested with cube test. In fact to design the concrete of a certain grade designer has to make cubes with different mix ratios and test them after 28 days and than finalize a mix which gives him desired characteristic compressive strength.

## Grades Of Concrete

As we all know strength of concrete depends on various factors like quality of cement, aggregate and the mix-proportion. One more important factor for concrete getting strength curing. Well cured concrete keeps getting stringer and stronger with time.
