Drawing is the language on engineers.
A drawing represent an actual structure that is visualized by a team of multiple people together like Architect, Structural Engineers etc. This is a representation of an idea which has to be brought to the existence.
Every drawing has some essential parts namely :
- Title Block
- Notes & References
- Main Content
Title block is the first part everyone who opens the drawing should see. The bigger size drawings should be folded in such a way that the title block is visible even without opening the drawing. Title block has to at least show following information :
- Project Name
- Project Location
- Project Owner
- Consulting Firm
- Contractor Firm
- Engineer Name & Signature
- Designer Name & Signature
- Purpose of Drawing Issue
- Drawing No.
- Drawing Title
- Drawing Scale
- Revision No.
- Date Of Revision
- Description of Revision
In addition to this drawing title should show some additional information like :
- Date of Drawing Was Created
- Date of Checking
- Date of First Issue
- Signature of Engineer & Designer
- Stamp of Approval
This is important to read the title block before opening the drawing as if you ignore this you may open the wrong drawings.
Notes & References
This part is very important as this is the part where designer provides information like :
- Units used in Drawings
- Material to be used for construction
- Specific instructions to construction team
- Codes & Standard referred and followed
- Other Documents & Drawings to be referred to interpret the drawing
Read notes carefully to understand the drawing well. This is where your design consultant is giving you some general information which may be applies to whole project.
Now this is the part where actual information about the project or a part f project is. There are various type of drawing which we get to see in the projects. This is why it is really difficult to standardize this content.
Still, We can divide the content in following elements :
North Direction (Essential for Plan & Layout Drawings)
This is normally shown up in most of the drawings.
Plan shows a top view of the structure or whichever component the drawing is made for.
This is a vertical view of the structure from outside. Can be made from different directions and angles.
This is also a vertical view, but from the inside of the structure.
Here the designer goes deep into the parts which are not clearly seen the other views or need further information to be shown. This is generally on a different scale from rest of the drawing.
The success of a construction project hugely depends on accurate reading, interpretation and understanding of drawings.
To read and understand drawing you a good knowledge of relevant codes in your area like IS:456, SP 34 and National Building Codes in India.
There are any more things which should be shown on the drawing like Key Plan. The information shown on a drawing changes project to project and company to company.
So just keep an eye on the various drawing on various projects you come across.
