# Weight Calculation : Reinforcement Bars, Flat Bars & Plates

**Calculating Weight of Reinforcement Bars**

Calculating weight of a reinforcement bar is simple. Just find the per meter weight for the dia of bar from the manufacturer data. But if manufacturer’s data is not available or handy we can use this formula to find unit weight.

**Weight per meter = D ^{2}/162.2**

Once you have Weight per meter you can easily multiply it with the length of bar in meters and get total weight.

Let’s see how we got to this formula:

Weight = Volume x Density of steel

Volume = Cross-Sectional Area of Bar (mm^{2}) x Length (mm)

Here, we are calculating unit weight first so we take length to be 1000m So the formula for volume will be :

Volume = (D^{2} x 3.14/4) x 1000 [D = Dia of Bar in mm]

= D^{2} x 785

Now,

Weight = (D^{2} x 785 x 7850) / (1000 x 1000 x 1000) kg

[Converted density of steel 7850 kg/m^{3} to kg/mm^{3}]

= D^{2} x 0.006162 kg

= **D ^{2 }/ 162.28 kg**

Now, Let’s take an example

Dia of Bar = 12mm

Weight Per Meter = 12^{2} / 162.28

= 0.8873 kg

Now multiply it with any length of bar in meters and get the weight.

**Calculating Weight of Flat Bars or Strips**

Calculating weight of flat bars is easy the formula is

Weight = Length (L) X Breadth (B) X Thickness (T) X Density

= L x B x T x 7850 / (1000 x 1000 x 1000)

[Converted density of steel 7850 kg/m^{3} to kg/mm^{3}]

= L x B x T x 0.00000785 kg

Now, we can simplified the formula for weight/meter as follows

Weight/m = Breadth (B) x Thickness (T) x 0.00785 kg

[Here all dimensions are in mm]

**Calculating Weight Plates**

Weight = Length (L) X Breadth (B) X Thickness (T) X Density

= L x B x T x 7850 / (1000 x 1000 x 1000)

[Converted density of steel 7850 kg/m^{3} to kg/mm^{3}]

= L x B x T x 0.00000785 kg

Now, let us simplify the formula to calculate m^{2} weight for any thickness.

Weight/m^{2} = Length (L) x Breadth (B) x Thickness (T) x 0.00000785 kg

= 1000 x 1000 x T x 0.00000785 kg

= T x 7.85 kg

[T = Thickness in mm]

Hope, The calculations were clear and understandable. Do let us know if we missed something.

**In Simple words:**

**To calculate the weight of any flat bar or a plate : multiply length, breadth & thickness than multiply with 7850 and divide the result by 1000 three times. (All dimensions in mm)**
